Masatoshi Ando, DDS, PhD, holds the position of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, Oral Health Research Institute at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). After receiving his DDS degree from the Osaka Dental University, Osaka, Japan, in 1989, Dr. Ando obtained his PhD degree in Preventive Dentistry at Osaka Dental University, Osaka, Japan, in 1993. While in Japan, Dr. Ando was a part-time general practitioner at the Osaka Dental University Hospital and several private dental offices. He held an appointment at the Nara Dental Hygiene School, Nara, as a lecturer of medical statistics and preventive dentistry. Dr. Ando also lectured to healthcare workers and patients in the community on oral healthcare and prevention of oral disease in his capacity as an Officer in the Environment and Public Health Bureau, Osaka Municipal Government, Osaka, Japan. In 1994, he accepted a position as Visiting Assistant Professor at IUSD.

In 1998, he accepted an Assistant Scientist position. In 2007, he accepted his current position as a tenure track Assistant Professor. Dr. Ando also holds a part time position at Dept. Preventive and Community Dentistry, Graduate School of Dentistry, Osaka Dental University, Japan. Dr. Ando is the past president of the Indiana Section of the American Association for Dental Research (INAADR) and has been a member for many years of the International/American Association for Dental Research (IADR/AADR), and the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA).

Research Interest

Dr. Ando has been performing research concerning early primary and secondary caries detection and quantification. He is the co-director of the Early Caries Detection and Management Research program. His main focus is to develop an objective and quantitative means to measure caries lesion activity. Dr. Ando was awarded independent funding by the National Institute of Health (NIH) / National Institute for Dental Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) R21 to achieve these goals in 2009. Dr. Ando has extensive experience in the application of quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) and histological validation of lesions, using such techniques as microfocus computed tomography (micro-CT), transverse microradiography (TMR), optical surface profilometry, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). He has also been conducting research with thermal images under pulse heating system in collaboration with Kobe University, Graduate School of Engineering, Japan, optical reflectometry, infrared laser fluorescence (DIAGNOdent) technique, electrical conductance measurement (ECM), and digital imaging fibro optic transillumination (DIFOTI). Dr. Ando has participated as a co-investigator and clinical examiner in numerous studies focusing on primary and secondary caries, several of which were sponsored by NIH/NIDCR and private industry. He has been training numerous clinical examiners using QLF and DIAGNOdent for clinical research. In 2010, the school has recognized his research efforts with the IUSD Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award for Research.
