James J. Fritts, DDS Clinical Care Center
at Indiana University School of Dentistry

Project Overview:

In August 2015, the Indiana University Board of Trustees gave unanimous approval for the design schematic of the 45,000-square-foot, $21.6 million clinical facilities expansion to the Indiana University School of Dentistry.

Ratio Architects and SmithGroupJJR have been busy at work designing a new dental school clinic for the 21st century. In recent years these firms also designed the Robert H. McKinney School of Law, the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute, and the Campus Center on the IUPUI campus.

This contemporary building addition will provide approximately 125 new state-of-the-art clinics for the 136-year-old school, which has been operating in facilities constructed in the 1930s, 1960s, and 1970s.

The new building project already has garnered more than $4 million from alumni and friends. The remainder of the $21.6 million construction project will be financed by dental school capital funds, auxiliary services revenue, indirect cost recovery funds, and gifts to the IU Foundation through For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign.

The name of the James J. Fritts, DDS Clinical Care Center was announced at a groundbreaking ceremony on September 23, 2016.

Completion is expected in the summer of 2018.

Indiana University School of Dentistry breaks ground for state-of-the-art, contemporary clinics

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie presided today over the groundbreaking ceremony for new state-of-the-art clinics at the IU School of Dentistry. The contemporary, $21.6 million building addition will provide 125 new patient treatment rooms for the state's only dental school, which is located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

At the groundbreaking, McRobbie announced that the clinical addition will be named the James J. Fritts, D.D.S. Clinical Care Center. Dr. James Fritts is a 1965 graduate of the dental school from Rochester, Indiana. Fritts and his family made a generous donation toward the new building.

The view from the main patient waiting room just got a lot more interesting!

Update: August 22, 2016

New signage has gone up outside the construction zone for the Indiana University School of Dentistry clinical building expansion. This gives the best look yet at what the view will look like in just two short years!

Just a reminder that patient parking is now located on the WEST side of the dental school. All returning patients should have received a DS parking decal in the mail last week that allows them to park in the DS marked spaces west of the dental school during their appointment. Parking ambassadors from both parking services and IUSD will be on hand at peak times to help ease the transition.

Today is the first day of classes for most schools on the IUPUI campus, so traffic and parking demand will be at their heaviest point of the year the next few weeks, so please keep that in mind when planning your trip in.

Additional parking information is available on and near campus by tuning your radio to AM 1610.
