The IU School of Dentistry congratulates each of the students, staff, and faculty whose work in research and teaching was cited for excellence at the IU School of Dentistry’s 21st annual Research Day, held at the IUPUI Campus Center on April 15.

The event is a collaboration of the IU School of Dentistry and the Indiana Section of the American Association for Dental Research.

After introductory remarks by Dean John Williams and Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer Nasser Paydar, Research Associate Dean Domenick Zero introduced keynote speaker Mary MacDougall, the James R. Rosen Chair of Dental Research and director of the Institute of Oral Health Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. Dr. MacDougall is also immediate past president of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Her presentation was titled “Probing the Lessons Learned from Dental Genetic Disorders.”

Dean Williams and AADR Indiana Section President Angela Bruzzaniti led the awards program, which also included an announcement of the dental students who have been awarded research fellowships for the next academic year.

Nearly 100 posters and clinical case reports were presented on wide-ranging topics pertinent to the field of dentistry, and they were complemented by two dozen informative displays in the Exhibits Hall. This year’s sponsors were the Delta Dental Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble/Crest, Shofu Dental Corporation, Indiana Dental Association, and IU component of the American Student Dental Association.

STAFF CATEGORY

Indiana Section American Association for Dental Research Staff Award
Clif DUHN
Research Analyst
Oral Health Research Institute; Preventive and Community Dentistry

New in 2013, this award recognizes Clif Duhn’s collective body of work and his invaluable contributions to research at the Oral Health Research Institute and IUSD for the past 13 years. Originally responsible for conducting Surface Microhardness (SMH) analyses for laboratorial and intraoral studies, Mr. Duhn has seen his role expand over time and he now provides support to all faculty, researchers, and students not only on SMH but also on other methods including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), micro-computed tomography, and 3D optical profilometry. Due to his deep knowledge and understanding of research techniques, he was appointed supervisor of the SEM and SMH laboratories in 2005 and 2006, respectively. His expertise in SEM led to his membership in a campus group that together with lead professor Jian Xie of Mechanical Engineering was awarded a National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation grant of $497,000 to acquire a new SEM facility for IUPUI. Mr. Duhn has mentored and/or trained more than 45 faculty and students in departments throughout the dental school, and in recent years he has presented lectures to graduate students on SEM theory and use. He has co-authored papers in the dental and mechanical engineering areas and presented his findings at research meetings.
