Patient Parking Relocation
This summer we will begin construction on our new Clinical Facilities Expansion, bringing over 45,000 square feet of new state of the art clinic space for our students and patients.
While we are committed to continuing to provide excellent patient care and student education during the building process, we know we will experience some growing pains. The new building will be located on the east side of the existing building, which means parking will change â again. The main entrance to the school clinics will be temporarily shifted to the west entrance ramp. As a result, patient parking will relocate to the west lot, in designated spots only. (See the map above)
This lot will be attended by parking âambassadorsâ daily, to assist and direct you to the area if you need help.
This temporary patient parking area will have no gate in or out, so parking will be easier.
In order to park in the reserved âDSâ spaces, parking decals are being mailed directly to patients. Â These temporary decals should be placed in the interior lower driversâ side corner of your windshield. Cars without the decal will be ticketed.
Because space is limited, we must ask you only park in these âDSâ spaces when you are coming to an appointment with the school. We want to ensure we have adequate parking for you on the day of your visit, and know that you will respect others on their appointment days as well.
If parking is unavailable in the temporary lot to the west of the Dental School, or if they haven't received a decal prior to their appointment, patients should park in the Vermont Street Garage and bring their garage ticket to their appointment for validation.Â
Adjunct Faculty Parking Change
Because we will have fewer parking spaces available to meet our patient needs, beginning July 1, 2016 â when FY16 to FY17 parking tags changeover â adjunct faculty will no longer be able to park in the east lot, and the limited number of spaces in the west lot will be reserved for patients only. We ask you to understanding and patience; convenient parking for our patients is necessary to keep our clinic volume strong. Â After August 1, when the east lot closes permanently, adjunct faculty members have two options:
Park in the Vermont Street garage.
For the adjunct faculty who work at the school fewer than eight half-days a month, Hourly parking in the Vermont Street garage is probably a workable financial option. For those who work at IUSD more often, you may purchase a garage pass for We encourage you to purchase a garage pass as soon as possible, before July 1, when all renewals are due. There is usually a waiting list for Vermont Street garage spots, but the list has moved very quickly in the past. People are already renewing their permits, so the earlier the better. Please move quickly if you choose this option. Â A more economical option than a garage permit is to obtain an EM tag, which allows you to park in the EM spots in the surface lots on campus. For FY 2016-2017, depending on what time you arrive on campus, and how frequently you are here, this may be a reasonable alternative. After 8:30 am, it can be quite challenging to find an EM spot, especially earlier in the semester. Spots open as the day progresses.

Future Parking Planning
We have studied, and continue to study, many parking options with two clear goals in mind: patient convenience and affordability. So far, shuttle buses and valet parking for the Vermont Street garage are cost prohibitive. The queuing of more than 120 cars at once, twice daily, for valet parking would create a bigger traffic jam than we have historically experienced in the east lot. We are looking at altering the start and stop times of clinical appointments to better accommodate patient parking.
On behalf of the entire dental school community (patients, student, staff, and faculty), your contributions to the dental school make an enormous difference. We value you and all that you give us, and we are looking at all avenues to minimize your frustration and discomfort related to the building project. In the name of progress, we will all experience change and some inconvenience. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we undertake this exciting new growth phase for the IU School of Dentistry.
Update: November 7, 2016
Construction has begun on the conversion of Michigan Street to accommodate two-way traffic between West Street and White River Parkway, similar to the renovation that recently concluded on New York street.Â
This will significantly impact traffic flow around the Dental School through early 2018. Â Please plan for unexpected delays.Â
It is recommended that incoming traffic take New York Street to Barnhill Avenue to Vermont Street to access the dental school's patient parking lot.Â
