Indiana Fluoride Rinse Program


IUSD FLUORIDE RINSE PROGRAM is a statewide dental program that partners with Indiana Elementary Schools, Youth Programs and Community Health Centers. The purpose of the program is to provide a safe and effective preventive method of reducing dental caries. Over the years, numerous schools have benefited from the Fluoride Rinse Program. The Indiana University School of Dentistry is very proud to partner with schools to improve the oral health of Indiana’s youth.

What is fluoride?

Today, fluoride is the most effective agent available to prevent tooth decay.  Years of research show that it makes teeth less susceptible to decay, both when taken internally during tooth development and when applied directly to the teeth.  Fluoride works in the following ways

  • Tooth enamel that has incorporated fluoride during development is more resistant to acid attack.
  • When applied directly to teeth in the mouth, fluoride helps to resist attacks by acids.  In addition, fluordie facilitates the repair of enamel previously dissolved by bacterial acids, and, thus can help to resotre considerable hardness to the damaged enamel at an early stage of decay, before an open cavity develops.  This process is called remineralization.
  • Fluoride acts directly in several ways to reduce acid production by the bacteria in dental plaque

Why should you say yes to fluoride rinses?

  • Fluoride can repair the earliest stage of decay before it turns into a cavity that needs to be filled.
  • Tooth decay, although on the decrease, is still one of the most common diseases affecting school age children.
  • Weekly fluoride rinsing reduces cavities even if children are getting fluoride at home.

What do participants get?

  • NaFrinse Sodium Fluoride 2 or 3 gm packets
  • Polyethylene container with 10 mL dispenser pump
  • Plastic cups
  • Paper napkins
  • Trash bags and ties
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste (if available)
