Oral Surgery Externship Program

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Indiana University is pleased to offer an externship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for third and fourth year dental students.  The length of time devoted to the externship is negotiable (up to one month).  The program is designed for those seeking additional exposure to hospital based Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and also those considering a career in the specialty.

The objectives of the externship are:

  1. To learn the scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

  2. To gain experience in outpatient surgical procedures.

  3. To gain experience working in the hospital setting, including the operating room and wards.

  4. To gain insight into the expectations of OMS residency training.

  5. To gain insight into selecting a residency in OMS.

Students will be exposed to the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and will receive supervision and guidance from both residents and staff.  Daily schedules will vary depending on departmental needs but students may expect to function in the operating room at least once during the week and in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinics on the remaining days.  In addition, students will be encouraged to take call with the residents.

Evaluation of students will be performed based upon the individual student's institutional guidelines.
