Ph.D. Oral Biology Track Sample


Sample Oral Biology Track Curriculum:

The following graduate-level courses, rotations, and examinations will be required of all students enrolled in the Oral Biology track. Because different students will enter the program at a variety of levels, and some may already have fulfilled a number of the requirements, the schedule proposed below refers to the greatest amount of time that normally will be allowed for completion of the core curriculum.

Year 1
Summer DENT-R 957 Introduction to Research (completion of first of 3 laboratory rotations; 3 credits) in anticipation of choosing a dissertation advisor and/or completion of courses such as general or organic chemistry to eradicate deficiencies identified prior to admission by the Admission Committee
Fall BIOC-B 500 Introduction to Biochemistry
BIOC-B 800 Medical Biochemistry

  Student chooses, with help from and approval of Advisory Committee, topic for grant proposal to be written and defended as part of qualifying exam for admission to candidacy for Ph.D. Topic may be in area of dissertation research project but not specifically the same.
Year 3
Summer Student writes research grant proposal and reviews for general knowledge written portion of qualifying exam.
  DENT-R 958 Research: Oral Biology variable
Fall Research grant proposal is approved by Advisory Committee Chair
  A time is set for the oral defense of research grant proposal, which may involve logical extensions into further questioning in areas of general knowledge.
  After successful completion of the oral defense portion of the qualifying exam, within 60 days student is given and completes written general knowledge portion of qualifying exam consisting of questions submitted by each member's Advisory Committee

  DENT-R 958 Research: Oral Biology variable
Spring Student forms Dissertation Research Committee to be composed of: 1) Dissertation Advisor as Chair (must be a full IU Graduate School faculty member); 2) two members of the IU Graduate School faculty from the Dental School; 3) one member of the IU Graduate School faculty from a department outside of the Dental school (usually from minor department); and 4) one expert in the specific area of the dissertation research outside of the Indiana University system (will usually be an IU Graduate School faculty affiliate member or meet the requirements for affiliate membership). More than 1/2 of the committee needs to be composed of full members of the IU Graduate School faculty. Once the Research committee has approved the student's project and the committee has been nominated and accepted by the Associate Dean for Graduate Education, the student is eligible for supply funding from the school ($1000/yr).
  Student's Dissertation Research Committee, except for outside member, will meet no less than twice annually to assess progress and make appropriate suggestions.
