The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Biopsy Service

The oral pathology biopsy service of Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) provides pathology services to dentists and physicians in Indiana and across the United States.  The service, also now known as the Oral Pathology Group (OPG), consists of Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists who are full-time faculty members at IUSD together with key clerical and financial staff.  While the technical processing of the biopsy specimens submitted to the service is performed through a contract with IU Health Pathology Laboratory, all of the diagnoses are rendered by the pathologists of the OPG.  In addition to the standard hematoxylin and eosin stained tissue sections, OPG orders and interprets a wide variety of special tissue stains, immunoperoxidase stains and in-situ hybridization studies.

The oral pathology biopsy service at IUSD was established in the early 1950s by Dr. William G. Shafer.  To this day, without interruption, our service has strived to provide the finest in oral and maxillofacial pathology services to the professional and lay community in Indiana and across the United States.  In addition, as a dental school-based service the experience and knowledge we gain from each case we receive contributes directly to the educational and research missions of our great school and to the knowledge base of our profession.  For specific topics please click on the links to the left:
