Dr. Melanie Peterson is the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs and Director of the General Practice Residency program and Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Peterson completed her D.M.D. degree at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1980, a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, KY (1981), an MBA at the University of Louisville (1990) and a Certificate in Health Professions Education (2005). Prior to entering academic dentistry at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry Dr. Peterson worked in public health for over fourteen years and served as the dental director at Central State Hospital where she worked primarily with special needs patients. She served as the AEGD Program Director at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry from 1995 to 1998. She was appointed as the Associate Dean for Clinics and Postdoctoral Education in January, 1999 at Louisville and served in this capacity until June, 2010. Dr. Peterson has served as an accreditation site visitor, an accreditation consultant and currently serves on the dental hygiene accreditation review committee. Dr. Peterson completed the ADEA Leadership Institute in 2004, was the recipient of the Williams J. Gies Award in 2006 and completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (ELAM) for Women in 2008-2009. Dr. Peterson’s primary area of interest is the sustainability of the traditional dental education model in view of the need to develop oral healthcare providers who are able to function within an interdisciplinary team.
