Pre-Doctoral Periodontics Didactic Program

Periodontology is an integral part of each year of dental school.

Freshman Year

Introduction to Periodontology
Four (4) lectures on the Normal Tissues of the Periodontium. These are supplemented with information on relevant web sites. In addition, the PBL cases will have information on the normal periodontium. 

Sophomore Year 

Fall Semester 
The Periodontology module is part of the Dental Sciences 2 Part 1 Course. 
A total of sixteen (16) hours of lecture time is followed by twelve (12) hours of laboratory time. Upon completion of the lecture and lab, the students are paired up and allowed to perform a dental prophylaxis on each other.

Junior Year 

Periodontal Summer Internship 

This is a limited (5 students) experience for those students who are considering periodontics as a specialty or would like to learn more about the field. It is an intense
one (1) week exposure to all things "periodontics".

Fall Semester 

Basic Periodontal Surgery

This course is designed to help the student gain an understanding of the basics of periodontal surgical technique along with an exposure to surgical procedures.
It consists of approximately fifteen (15) lecture sessions. 

Spring Semester

Advanced Periodontal Surgery
This course is designed to help the student gain an understanding of the more advanced periodontal surgical procedures and esthetic procedures. It consists of ten (10) lecture sessions. Students also learn surgical techniques on "pig heads". This laboratory allows them to gain a better understanding of incision techniques, flap elevation and suturing.
