Student Laptop Program

Information Services and Technology Management (ISTM) provides support for students, faculty, and staff in the use of technology supporting our three core missions: Education, Research, and Clinical Service. Many curricular activities at the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) require the use of mobile devices. Much of your course work will involve computers, and we have a computer-based clinical system that tracks and records all aspects of patient care, from appointments and contact information to treatment plans and completed procedures. Therefore, it is essential for each student to have a portable personal computer that is compatible with our learning environment.

Orthodontic students should stop by the Technology Office, DS 120, regarding their laptop specifications.

DDS, Operative, Prosthodontic, Periodontic, and Hygiene students can purchase laptops using the following specifications listed below: 

Hardware and Software Requirements for Student Laptops

In order to ensure that students will be able to successfully run the axiUm application and the ExamSoft testing software, the following minimum hardware and software requirements have been established based on the software vendors’ recommendations.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • Processor: 2GHz Intel Core/Celeron or equivalent x86 processor
  • Display resolution must be at least 1024 x 768 or higher
  • Wireless Connectivity
  • Ethernet Connectivity
  • At least 1 USB port
  • At least 2 GB RAM
  • Hard Drive: At least 1 GB free space required by exam software

Note: Tablet-PCs, including the Microsoft Surface, will not run the exam software; therefore, they are not recommended for use at this time.

Minimum Software Requirements

  • Microsoft Windows 7 or 8 (32-bit or 64-bit Configurations)
  • Macintosh OS
  • Acrobat Reader 9, X, or 11
  • Microsoft Office 2010
  • Full hard disk encryption software
  • Anti-Virus software

ISTM will provide guidance and assistance to any students who have questions regarding these minimum requirements, or need assistance with configuring the device for use in the school environment. ISTM will be able to refer the students to additional resources such as UITS or the device manufacturer. Students can contact ISTM via email at istmhelp@iu.edu.

Students can purchase laptops for a discount through IU’s personal purchasing program. Vendor stores can be accessed through the following site: http://uits.iu.edu/page/ameb. Software can be downloaded via the IUware portal located at http://iuware.iu.edu/.

All students are responsible for reading, understanding and abiding by the University’s Acceptable Use Agreement for accessing the University network. This agreement can be found at: IU Keep It Safe.  Security measures implemented by the university and the school are implemented to protect the student, university, school and the school’s patients.  Tampering with,  or removal,  of these security measures in not permitted unless authorized by ISTM. Violations of this policy will result in disciplinary action according to standard University and IUSD Academic Affairs procedures.
