Narrative of Professional Career
James R. Miller DDS, MSD, PhD is the Indiana State Oral Health Director at the ISDH, a Visiting Scholar at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Miller received a DDS, Certificate in Orthodontics, and a Masters of Science in Dentistry from the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Miller also received a Certificate in TMJ and Craniofacial Pain from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Washington. Dr. Miller has over 30 years experience in teaching, clinical research, private practice, and public health. Dr. Miller is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors.

Research Programs
Dr. Miller has been funded by private industry, academia, state and federal government. Dr. Miller has conducted clinical research in orthodontics and epidemiological research on temporomandibular disorders. As the Indiana State Oral Health Director he has conducted several surveillance projects and a state-wide survey of the oral health and BMI status of 3rd grade children. Dr. Miller was also a co-principal investigator on a large federally supported pilot project to help develop regional dental sealant programs in Indiana. Dr. Miller is currently consulting with the Division of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at the ISDH on a state-wide project to increase the oral health literacy of the people enrolled in WIC. Dr. Miller continues to develop and promote public health projects to improve the oral health of the residents of Indiana.
