Darlene D. West, DDS is Clinical Assistant Professor of Hospital Dentistry and Director of the Hospital Dentistry rotation for third year dental students at IUSD, as well as long time FT faculty with the postdoctoral General Practice Residency Program. As a dentist who spends most of her time in a hospital setting she has developed expertise in the management of medically complex oncology and transplant patients as well as patients with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dr. West graduated with an RDH degree in 1968 and worked for 9 years in a Pediatric Dentistry office in South Bend, Indiana, where she first began her education in the treatment of individuals with intellectual and developmental disorders. At the encouragement of her employers, Dr. Charles Rosenbaum and Dr. Douglas Barton, she applied and was accepted to dental school at Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1977. Upon graduation in 1981, Dr. West was accepted into the General Practice Residency Program through Indiana University and Wishard Hospital. Following completion of this program she was offered and accepted a part time position as faculty with IU School of Dentistry with the purpose of initiating and administering the Operating Room rotation for the GPR. This rotation remains a vital part of the residency program to this day and continues to serve the IDD population, managing the treatment of nearly 200 patients who are in need of this valuable service, per year.

Dr. West, a full time faculty of IUSD since 1994, provides training for students and residents in the treatment of the medically compromised and IDD populations at University Hospital within the Department of Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry. She has been very involved in the training of first and second year dental students as a supporter and facilitator of Problem Based Learning. As clinical faculty she remains very active staffing the operating room and is most recently working on a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care both for patients living with cancer at the IUSCC and for patients with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Recently, Dr. West has been involved with Service Learning and Community Engagement at IUSD.  This has afforded her the opportunity to work with Moi University School of Dentistry in Eldoret, Africa, alongside Dr. Karen Yoder and Dr. Caroline Kobosia, in an effort to establish a school based sealant program for the children in Eldoret and outlying villages.  In addition, this program has enabled a student exchange, enabling 7 IUSD students thus far to learn alongside the MSD students and bringing 2 dental students from MSD to IUSD, September, 2011.  In the area of Community Engagement, Dr. West has agreed to volunteer as a faculty supervisor for the Student Outreach Clinic in cooperation with People's Health and Dental Center.
